FORT HOOD, Texas - III Corps and Fort Hood honored 14 veterans at a retirement celebration, Aug. 28, here at the Phantom Warrior Center.

First Army Division West Bids Farewell, Welcomes New Commander

"I was looking forward to this," said 1st Sgt. Brandon N. Heath, First and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, and a native of Goldsboro, North Carolina. "I'm ready to start another chapter in my life, to move forward and take what I've learned from the Bible and use it for a new work."

Heath, along with his family, and other retirees and their families, gathered to receive honors and awards for years of selfless service.

Although the focus was on today's ceremony, Staff Sgt. Tracie L. Dailey, 479th Field Artillery Brigade, First Division West, a native of Hampton, Virginia, shared her thoughts at a breakfast hosted last morning by Division West commander, Maj. Gen. Gene. Jeffrey N. Colt.

"It was nice and really nice and striking," Dailey said. "Major General Colt was very calm and was just one of the soldiers."

Staff Sergeant Omar A. Lopez-Martinez, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, from Silver Springs, Maryland, also described his morning post-retirement experience.

"It's a good time to talk, socialize and share stories about how our transition is going and thinking about the future," Lopez-Martinez said.

Colt, the host and moderator of the ceremony, sent his congratulations and best wishes to the retired soldiers.

"It's a great honor to lead the retirement ceremonies," Colt said. "Sessions like this and events like the breakfast provide a lot of information during the change decision and the lifespan."

As the ceremony progressed, each soldier and their guests received their retirement awards, flags and medals, and their families were present for photos and tributes.

John Banks, father of Staff Sgt. Dailey, a retired senior U.S. Air Force officer, spoke about his daughter's retirement.

"I'm so proud of my daughter and her accomplishments. I'm glad she got to where I left off serving and proud of our country," Banks said.

After the ceremony, some of the high-ranking guests gave advice for the future of the pensioners and their plans for the future.

"Start preparing for retirement early," said Dailey, who plans to complete a master's degree in psychology and human resource management.

"Get ready," Heath said. "There are still many opportunities, and the work is progressing well so that we can have programs for the Soldiers to help change things to be a little better.

In a final thank you to the retirees and their families, Colt said, "To sum up, the selfless and selfless service rendered by service members and their families is one of our greatest honors," Colt said. The evening will conclude with the Friday Night Social, where participants will have the opportunity to play bingo and learn different dances.

On Saturday, October 29, the VA Mobile Vet Center will be open all day in addition to the County Fair, where vendors will have a variety of displays. In addition, Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center hosts a health fair that offers a combination of research and educational programs held throughout the day. The weekend will conclude with a demonstration by the cavalry detachment of the 1st Cavalry Division at 2 p.m.

"We're really looking forward to (Retirement Appreciation Day) because we haven't had it in two years," said Lorraine Shannon, chief pension officer for the Fort Hood Office of Retirement Services. "(We didn't do this) because of COVID. However, in 2019 and before, that's what we did, so we'd love to get back to it.

Annual Retiree Appreciation Days Are Back

Retirement Appreciation Day shows appreciation for the many sacrifices, dedication and all that the Service has given and continues to do. Fort Hood is responsible for 156,000 retirees, who live in 175 counties. Between 3,000 and 4,000 people are expected to attend Retirement Thanksgiving.

Although the weekend is intended for retirees, it is also special for soldiers stationed at Fort Hood.

"A lot of people don't understand that. "A lot of retirees like to talk to young soldiers so they can see how different it is now than it was when they were there," Shannon said.

A Thanksgiving dinner for retirees was recently canceled. Those who paid in advance will be refunded in full. In addition, the location of legal aid was changed from building 13 to building 42004.
